In class we have been discussing the importance of descriptive writing. When an author uses a good desription to paint a picture in your mind, it really helps you enjoy the book. In the book that we are currently reading in class, "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George, the author uses wonderful descriptions of the wilderness and the mountains to make the reader feel like you are surving in the wild along with the main character, Sam Gribley.
Here is an example from the book, where Sam is describing his tree house, "My bed is on the right as you enter, and is made of ash slats and covered with deerskin. On the left is a small fireplace about knee high. It is made of clay and stones. It has a chimney that leads the smoke through a knothole. I chipped out three other knotholes to let fresh air in. The air coming in is bitter cold. It must be below zero outside, and yet I can sit here inside my tree and write with bare hands. The fire is small too. It doesn't take much fire to warm this tree room."
Your assignment this week is to find a description from the book you are currently reading, and post it on this blog. Explain in several sentences why you chose the description. Be sure to include the title of the book and the author.

"You'll notwait in line, you'll wait at the very end of our class line, she said in a voice that sounded painfully like an overstretched rubber band. Tommy mimicked her silently, his eyes halk closed, as he wandered slowly toward the back."

The book I am currently reading is Dear America The Titanic. The description I chose was this. "When I entered the hotel, I feeled like a princess. There were refleacted floors, red rugs, and classical music. I am poor, so I think it's okay to be over excited. I saw some people dining on wine and steak. It looked expencive, but it was worth it when I see the Titanic." The reason I chose it is because they described the hotel so nicely, and like in the description, it is appropriete to get overly excited to stay in a hotel for the first time when you're poor.
ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is the "Dog Days of Charlotte Hayes" by Marlane Kennedy. The description I chose was, "The afternoon sun is shining from behind Petunia, and again, like the first time we met, I am struck of how pretty she is. Tiny nose. Tiny chin. Big eyes. She is wearing a rose-colored skirt today, and a blue knit sweater,and she has a small bit of makeup on. I find myself wondering what she used to look like when she was younger."
ReplyDeleteI chose this description because in my head I can picture what she looks like. I can see that in this book Petunia means a lot to Charlotte, and Charlotte looks up to Petunia. Petunia also is kind in this book with a slow voice. Petunia enjoys Charlotte too.
The book I'm reading is titled Unicorns by Lucille Penner.The description I like is "It had scales like a dragon. It had a beard and a long mane and tail. It's coat was a rainbow of bright colors-red,blue,yellow,black,and white.It's long horn is made out of pure silver."

The book I am reading is titled,"True (sort of...)" by Katherine Hanigan the description that I choose was "the ball hit me with a boom in my mouth I fell thinking did I make the shot? My red nike shirt was swaying in the cool breeze as felt blood from my two front teeth making it to the ground splattering on the floor". I like this discription because you can feel Brud Kinney (the main character) falling down as he played basket ball with his friends and the ball hit his head and now his two front teeth are out of his mouth, and he has already been discribed as sporty.

I like this description because it makes Spiro sound dangerous.When you read his you know what Spiro looks like.It makes him sound dangerous and his butler told him that Spiro was a dangerous man.

I like this description because it shows what kind of traveling the elevator is doing. They go everywhere in space, and the whole family inside it is very excited! It is like the adventure never stops.
The book I am reading is titled, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix" by J. K. Rowling. The decription I choose was, "There was a commotion outside as sevral large Slytherins entered,each gripping Ron, Ginny, Luna, and-to Harry's bewildement-Neville,who was trapped in a stranglehold by Crabbe and looked in imminent danger of suffocation. All four of them had been gagged."
ReplyDeleteI choose this description because, I thought it was entertaining. My second opinion is that it was very descriptive. The last thing I thought it was mean of the charaters to do what they did.
The title of my book is: Judy Moody & Stink the Holly Joliday by Megan McDonald. "Judy plugged the flamingo lights back in. The palm tree twinkled with all the colors of a sunset in Hawaii."
ReplyDeleteI chose this passage because by writing that the palm tree twinkled with all the colors of a sunset in Hawaii, the author helped me visualize exactly what the flamingo lights would look like. I know what the colors of a sunset are, so I can imagine in my mind what the flamingo lights looked like.
The book I am reading is "Hank the Cowdog - The Case of the Swirling Killer Tornado" written by John R. Erickson. The description that I chose is "KA-BOOM!......"yikes, that we're being attacked by an enormous thunder storm......holy smokes look at the lightning in that cloud". "Yeah and I'm scared of storms." I like this description because it reminds me of the time when lightning struck my tree in my front yard. I'm scared of storms too.

ReplyDeleteThe Last Olympian. The author is Rick Riordan. The description I chose is, "We parked on a ridge overlooking the Atlantic. The sea is always one of my favorite places, but today it was espcially nice--glittery green and smooth as glass, as though my dad was keeping it calm just for us. I like this decription because it gives me a picture in my head of a calm green sea and makes me feel peaceful.

I can really see this in my head. A giant ant coming out of the ground to eat Agent Umber. It makes me feel scared for Agent Umber that he might die. That would be freaky if a giant ant would be chasing me.
The book I am currently reading is called, "Dying To Meet You", Kate Klise is the author. The description that I chose is, There is a serious problem with the house that I have rented. A young boy is living on the third floor. I encountered him for the first time this morning when I was familiarizing myself with the house. The boy was in a tiny room on the third floor that can be reached only by climbing the most perilous staircase and then creeping down a crooked hallway. The entire house is arranged in this same higgedly-piggedly style. Whoever designed it must've been half batty.

"Oh, dear," I suddenly felt queasy." I like this description because I can draw a picture of Geronimo's face saying dear. it makes me feel sad for him, because he has to pay for all the things his sister did for his birthday.
ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is titled Florida Marlins by Mark Stewart .The description I chose was it is very hard to hit home runs especially to center field because the Marlins have one of the deepest out fields in baseball. It has other interesting features including the pitchers mound that can be lowered underground when the Dolphins want to take the field.I like this description because .the pitchers mound can be lowered underground. Also because it is one of the deepest fields.
