Apologies to all about the trouble with this discussion question. I think we have officially fixed all the issues and should be good to go!
The discussion question this week is just like discussion question # 8. Please read the poem below and share your thoughts about what you think it means. Explain your reasons and discuss what kinds of emotions you think the author was trying to get you to feel when he wrote it. When you have finished writing about what the poem means to you, I want you to pick your favorite verse from the poem and write about why it stood out.
This poem is one of my personal favorites, so read carefully and enjoy!
Also, I want you to take your time with spelling, and make sure you analyze the poem one stanza at a time. A stanza is a group of lines that are separated from the others, like a paragraph or verse in a song.
We will be sharing these in class, and together we will decide on who had the best response of the week. They will win the title of Golden Blogger until the next discussion question.

DON’T GIVE UP
by Phoebe Gary
If you’ve tried and have not won,
Never stop for crying;
All that’s good and great is done
Just by patient trying.
Though young birds, in flying, fall,
Still their wings grow stronger,
And the next time they can keep
Up a little longer.
Though the sturdy oak has known
Many a wind that bowed her,
She has ris’n again and grown
Loftier and prouder.
If by easy work you beat,
Who the more will prize you?
Gaining victory from defeat,
That’s the test that tries you.
This poem to me is about someone who has lost in something and by losing something you gain a lesson by being defeat. At the beginning it said how you have not won, but at the end it said you "gaining victory from defeat" which is my point of you gain victory which is the lesson you got it from being defeated. I also prove my inference of what the poem is about is by the sentence "Through the sturdy oak has known many a wind that bowed her, she has ris'n again and grown loftier and prouder". By saying "she has ris'n again and grown loftier and prouder" by saying prouder means she is proud for learning something new and by saying the word grown it means she\he grown by learning something new which is the lesson. This poem seems very calm but has a point to me of learning something new. As I start to reread, my inference grows stronger finding more reasons why I think my inference is correct. I think the lesson of this poem is when you lose something for example a game you learn a lesson from it.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem means...To never give up just because your crying ,make a mistake, don't succeed, or don't reach you goal. If you keep trying patiently you will eventually reach your goal or work towards it. If you have tried them you have done great. You are prouder stronger and better by what you have done. That's what I think the poem means.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite verse of the poem is the first one because that is basically what all the other ones mean. That verse is the one that is said in a easier to me. I think it stood out because I think it's the easiest to understand ( Like i said in the last sentence.).
i hope you got my comment.
ReplyDeleteThis poem "Don't give Up" by Phoebe Gary is a poem about keep trying. The first stanza means that when you make a mistake don't stop for sympathy just keep working at it until you get it right. The second stanza is about when you keep doing and practicing the same thing you will get better at it even if it means messing up or making a mistake. The third stanza is when you keep facing your fears and being brave you'll finally be able to face anything a little more challenging. The fourth stanza is mainly about who will praise you when you have accomplished something very, very easy that you have beaten before in your life. "Gaining victory" means that you have done better than last time, but you still haven't beaten it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite line is "Gaining victory from defeat" because it means that when you are trying your best to accomplish something you have improved from last time, but have not accomplished the whole thing.
I think the prize in the poem is the goal in your life coming true, because he put the little birds fall when they try flying. For the birds, if you can't fly, it means you will die. So that's the goal in their life for them.
ReplyDeleteI like the reminder to never give up. I will not give up even when I have a bad day. I like the 4th stanza because it's kind of like talking about sports, and I like sports. It reminds me of our last football playoff game that we lost, and I still didn't give up playing next year because I know we'll do better and not give up.
ReplyDeleteI think the author is trying to to tell you not to fall cry or quit.I think you should stand up tall and do what you want to do,and not to cheat because cheaters ALWAYS LOSE.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about this poem are that to try and never quit!! My feelings about this poem is try! Try! Try! Try! My favorite line in this poem is "Gaining victory from defeat. It catches me and tells me to never quit. If you do that at some point you will win.
ReplyDeleteWhat I got from the first stanza is to try,try again!!!! The second stanza is about birds that dont stop trying to fly. The next part of the poem is about a tree that does not stop trying to grow despite the elimints. Last but most importantly, the person who put in the most efert realy won.
ReplyDeleteI like the last part best. I relate to that because my dislexia makes me work hard.
This poem is about animal or person that lost everything but there is one light.(one last hope.) I have thoght that one day someone or somewhere will lost everything. But I belive that one person at least never give up and have a hope become true.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the author of this poem had something related to a certain thing in her life. Maybe she also did the things in the poem and it inspired her to write this. She could also could have wrote this not for fun, but to encourage children and adults to do what it said on the title, "Try, Try, Try!". I would be as positive as the author to write a poem myself. The poem might encourage ME to attend a game so even if I lose, I learn something.
ReplyDeleteThis poem tells me never give up keep trying to do it even if you go down start over what you had started and every time you start again something gets stronger inside you.It also tells me work that is easy to beat is less valuable than trying many times and getting to the top with out giving up.
ReplyDeleteI think it means keep trying and do your best and even if you mess up, don't feel down in your heart. The second verse gave me my emotions. The author is trying to make the reader feel confident. The verse about the bird is my favorite because it talks about a little bird who has a lot of confidence to keep trying to fly.
ReplyDeleteTo me the poem seems like it is about never giving up. The first stanza to me means never give up and be a bad sport because when you lose it is okay and you will always play again. The second stanza means to means that every time you play will get better and better. The third stanza means you will really try harder if you lose because if you stay at a certain level you will for sure always lose. The last stanza to me means that no matter if you lose or win you will always be a winner inside. I think this poem can be very inspiring to some people.
ReplyDeleteI think the poem means that you should never give up no matter how hard you have to try. My favorite part was the verse "Though young birds, in flying, fall,Still their wings grow stronger,
ReplyDeleteAnd the next time they can keep,Up a little longer." This poem also encourage me to keep working harder in the future.
I think the first stanza means the person who lost thinks in there own brain at least I tried my best.I think the second stanza is about a bird keeps trying to fly and keeps practices. The oak tree tries to stand up like when the person loses. Now finally you defeat who you where going against.
ReplyDeleteTo me the poem, DON’T GIVE UP means that even though you lost it doesn't mean that you failed at it. You should never give up at what you want to do. You should go with whatever your heart tells you to. Once you've lost, you know that it doesn't feel too great, but winning doesn't feel good either. I mean sure winning something is great , but only for a while. If you've won forever, then you don't know what it's like to loose. If you don't know what it's like to loose, than what good does winning do to you?!?!?!?! Make it so you can have equal loses than wins. If by easy work you beat,
ReplyDeleteWho the more will prize you?
Gaining victory from defeat,
That’s the test that tries you.
that is the stanza that brought out the emotions for me. I liked that verse because it means that if you beat something that is easy for you, then that's no big deal. But if you lost at some thing hard, you will be better at it the next time you try, and if you keep on trying, and trying you'll finally win and it'll be a good feeling inside of you, and that is your prize.
Stanza i is about trying and to never stop trying and if you are patient, patients is how you win.
ReplyDeleteStanza 2 is about you might not do something the first time but next time you will be better.
Stanza 3 is about even though you may be old you might rise again as a new person.
Stanza 4 is about even if you get beat you can try again and improve
